Christian Counseling Services

History and Operations

In 1984 ten Christian churches in southeastern Connecticut saw the need for a regional Christian faith-based counseling service, providing capabilities beyond the usual training and time constraints of the typical local pastor or the churches' lay counseling programs. So, they banded together for a season to establish a non-profit IRS 501 (c) (3) counseling ministry, the Christian Counseling Center of Southeastern CT, Inc.. They provided the initial seed funding, rented an office, and hired for the Center's first Christian counselor, Dr. Frank Burchell, a retired Navy chaplain. Pastors from the churches became the first overseeing Board of Directors. Soon the "Center," as it was to become known in these churches, was financially self-sufficient and providing a diverse range of counseling to the Christian community and others. Numerous professional Christian counselors have served at the Center over the years, with the staffing responding to the area's economy and the community's  needs. The Rev. Stephen J. Brewer, Ph.D. became  the Center's second Executive Director in 1995 and has been on staff ever since.

A Board of Directors continues to oversee the Center's operation but now they are a cross-section of the community's military, business and medical Christian professionals. The current President is Theodore Janacek, P.E., the Secretary is CAPT. Lyle Watkinson, SC, USN (Ret.), Deborah Yering, RN is the Treasurer. Other Board members are Attorney Alan R. Messier, Elfriede Janacek, MS Ed, and CAPT. Roy Springer, USN (Ret.), the Past President.

Mission

The Christian Counseling Center of Southeastern Connecticut is a non-profit Christian counseling ministry that exists to glorify God by offering Biblically-based psychological, emotional and spiritual healing to Christian and non-Christian children, adults, couples and families in southeastern Connecticut and southern Rhode Island. This healing will be accomplished with the help of God, through prayer, the wise application of the Holy Scriptures and through the efforts of a clinically trained and licensed Christian professional counseling staff to the fullest extent possible. The counselors will be assisted by a caring office staff and by the prayer, volunteer help and financial support of an active membership. The Center will conduct its ministry in cooperation with local Christian churches and other area Christian ministries, and in association, as necessary, with other mental health professionals and facilities. As a non-profit, religious organization, a Board of Directors who will govern all its affairs will oversee the Center. The organization will operate in accordance with the highest standards of Christian ethics, clinical practice and financial accountability.
